Before & After

before'n'afterAs I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m much happier with the image quality I’m now able to achieve when ripping LDs.  The picture to the right shows a close up from our original release of Villgust, which was blurry and suffered badly from rainbow effects, next to our latest encode.

Here are some more side by side images to compare:

The second OVA was as hellish to deal with as it was the first time around.  I’d forgotten how much of a field blended, colour shifted, awful travesty of a transfer that disc was – it gave me nightmares all over again!  I must have spent 100+ hours reprocessing the video to get it looking acceptable, but it was well worth it as I can now watch it on a big screen without having a seizure ^_^;

All I need to do now is give the scripts a little tidy up, so expect a release in the coming weeks.

It’s release time!

And here it is, the first LAkiba release in a long, long time…

Handsome Girl – OVA
Click on these bittorrent or ed2k links to download.

Handsome GirlThis OVA was originally fansubbed by Tomodachi Anime many moons ago, but the only versions I’ve found of it online are low quality captures of their VHS release.  Luckily I have the LD in my collection (I’m a big fan of the mangaka, Yoshizumi Wataru) and was able to make a reasonable capture of it.  The script is based on the Tomodachi release, although a fair amount of retranslation and editing was needed, including a complete reworking of the songs.  Not quite the quicky job I had in mind, but it was worth the extra effort!

This is the first time I’ve used an .mkv container and aac/h264 codecs, so hopefully I haven’t created something that only plays on a handful of machines.  I’ve also switched to using softsubs, which means I’ve been able to include versions of the script with and without the translation/cultural notes, so that’s one less thing I should have to hear complaints about.

Hopefully our next release won’t be so long coming!

Enjoy ^_^

Yes, it really has been that long…

Irrashaimase!

So… errr… it has been nearly 5 years since I last posted an update and now I’m suddenly back with a shiny new website. I wonder if anyone still had the old site linked? Probably not, lol! To cut a long story short, Rumi and I had a baby and moved to a new home. I don’t think our absence really requires any more explanation than that! ^_^;

We’ve not had much time for hobbies since becoming parents, but the little one isn’t so little anymore and I finally got around to clearing a room for all our anime paraphernalia. We’re now having lots of fun catching up with a huge backlog of shows and getting our kid hooked too. I’ve even been able to spare a few hours to tinker with my subbing kit, which is why you’re now reading this.

I was never all that happy with my previous digisub releases because the quality of my laserdisc rips were poor, so the first thing I wanted to do was remedy that ugliness. I got really lucky and picked up a cheap Pioneer CLD-D99 from eBay, which fixed a lot of the colour bleeding/rainbowing issues, but the rips were still quite noisy. Several capture card purchases later I finally had one without a TV tuner (the cause of noise on my original card) that could handle the correct framerates, didn’t have automatic comb/sharpen filters and compression, etc, etc. It took a while to figure out the complete ripping process, but the difference in quality between my previous and current captures is like night and day, whoot!

I’m still tinkering with .mkv files and aac/h264 codecs right now, but here’s a clue as to what we’ll be releasing next ~ We were lucky Rumi found this video as it’s impossible to hear all the lyrics in the anime itself, phew!

P.S. I’ve migrated the old news updates here as posts, although some of them don’t make much sense as I lost the VHS distribution updates that gave them context a long time ago, oops! I remember to make regular backups these days…
